Tokyo, Kyoto
& the Izu coast
Japan

Ma

There is a word in Japanese — ma — for the interval between things. Not empty space but charged space: the pause that gives the note its shape, the gap in a hedge that frames the hill behind it.

Tokyo appears to have none of it. Ginza at night is a solid wall of light. Shinjuku gives the eye nowhere to rest. But stand still on a platform at rush hour and the crowd opens and closes around you in a rhythm, and there it is — interval, everywhere, moving.

Kyoto keeps its ma in the stones. Ninenzaka at six in the morning is a corridor of grey and cedar with nobody in it, and it is the emptiness that is the subject.

i

Tokyo

A city that looks, at first, like it has no intervals at all — until you stop walking and let it move around you.

ii

Kyoto

Where Tokyo fills every interval, Kyoto protects them. Arrive early enough and the protection is total.

iii

The Izu coast

Two hours south of the largest city on earth, and the horizon goes back to being one unbroken line.
